Catholic Schools Broken Bay believe a Catholic education is for life and offers a diverse range of educational opportunities from K-12.
Every student who is enrolled in a CSBB primary school will be supported to continue their 7-12 education within the CSBB system. Where there is no availability in parents’ school of choice, support will be available for enrolment at another CSBB school that best suits their child’s learning.
Our Primary schools work hand-in-hand with their local Secondary school to provide a seamless transition and a sense of continuity in our students learning journey.
WHY STAY AT OUR LADY OF DOLOURS TO GRADE 6?
Without doubt the best environment in which to receive a primary education is a Primary School. Not only are the classroom teachers specialists with experience in age and stage appropriate education for primary students, the leadership of the school specialises in the social and emotional needs of primary students.
The social and emotional needs of girls and boys in the final years of Primary School are significantly different from those of the young men and women in secondary colleges, even those with primary departments. Though many students in Years 5 & 6 have older siblings, their interactions with young adults in the home is very different to immersion into adult interaction on a much larger scale at the age of 10 or 11.
MATURITY AND LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
There are many opportunities that Primary Schools are able to offer to students in Years 5 & 6 that other schools cannot provide:
- Buddy programs develop empathy in older students and promote self-awareness and self-regulation. Students that have accompanied younger buddies settle well into new settings themselves and are more willing to seek support if and when they require it.
- Leadership exercised within a familiar setting builds self-confidence and promotes safe risk taking in both social and learning environments as students transition to high school.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR ENRICHMENT
Within the community of Catholic Schools Broken Bay our primary and secondary schools have developed close working relationships that allow students in Years 5 & 6 to develop gradual connections to high school.
Some of the programs offered include:
- Mathematics enrichment
- Science enrichment
- Creative Arts and Technology workshops
- Sports coaching and officiating
- Public speaking and debating
WHAT DO THE EXPERTS SAY?
For boys in particular, the need to wind up a part of their lives is very important – to appreciate the journey they have been on since starting school and look back with satisfaction on their childhood and where they have come from……….Primary Schools should have good transition to high school programs in place but their final years must not be seen entirely as preparation for something else. Boys live for the moment at this stage of their lives and should be allowed to celebrate the rites of passage that go along with finishing primary school.
